Today about 340 million people do not have the Bible in their own language. Larry and Andrea are serving in Eurasia translating the Bible into tribal languages that have never had the scriptures in their native tongue.
Larry and Andrea have been serving with Wycliffe in the Mediterranean region for ten years. Larry had spent 13 years there before that. They have two girls, Amani (7) and Shireen (6). (in 2011)
They work alongside native speakers, some of them being scholars of a major language and religion, and also with native speakers of local minority languages to promote the translation, production, distribution and use of the scriptures. Some of the ultimate users of these translations are illiterate and almost all of the people in the area are culturally more comfortable with oral rather than written means of communication. Aware of this, Larry and Andrea are also involved with promoting the use of poetry, song and chanted forms of Scripture. They also make it available on the Internet and to mobile phones. Even semi-literate people use cell phones for communication, including nomads who live in tents.
Andrea and Larry have a vision for “doing whatever it takes” to make the form of the Word of God available in the area culturally appropriate.
1-7-2012 Update
Dear
friends,
We'd like to start by wishing you a happy New Year! Know that we would have
loved to spend the Christmas season with all of you, and that email is a poor
second choice!
Andrea has made good progress since her treatment (radioactive iodine) for
hyperthyroidism in October. She has much more energy now and the doctor is
happy with her progress.
As we move into 2012, we are mindful of the challenge of understanding our
non-Christian neighbors and communicating accurately and faithfully to them.
The latest issue of International Journal of Frontier Missiology (IJFM) has
several useful articles on translating the Bible, and in particular the issue
of translating familial language. Andrea and I helped coauthor the first two
articles, under pen names. You can download the entire issue as a zipped file
from the link below:
http://www.ijfm.org/PDFs_IJFM/28_3_PDFs/IJFM_28_3-EntireIssue.zip
You can also access the issue simply by going to www.ijfm.org.
Thanks for your faithful partnership with us in service of Christ!
Blessings from all of us,
Larry
